Chichen Itza, Mexico, Lodging

Chichen Itza is a large pre-Columbian archaeological site in Yucatán, Mexico (20°40`N, 88°34`W) built by the Maya civilization. Chichen contains many fine stone buildings in various states of preservation; the buildings were formerly used as temples, palaces, stages, markets, baths, and ballcourts.

The Yucatán has no above-ground rivers, so the fact that there were three natural sink holes (cenotes) providing plentiful water year round at Chichen made it a natural spot for a center of population. Two of these cenotes are still in existence, the most famous being the legendary Cenote of Sacrifice, which was sacred to the Maya rain god Chaac. Offerings of jade, pottery, and incense were thrown into the great well as offerings to Chac, and occasionally during times of desperate drought a human sacrifice -- however there is no confirmation in either ancient chronicles nor the archeological dredging of the cenote to confirm the lurid tales of some tour guides claiming that great numbers of beautiful, young, virgin women were regularly cast into the well. The Sacred Cenote was long a place of pilgrimage Yucatán.

In 1839 United States travel writers Benjamin Norman, followed the next year by John Lloyd Stephens, visited and published accounts of the ruins of Chichen Itza. Various other expeditions made further examinations of the ruins in the following decades. In 1901 the United States Consul to Yucatán, Edward H. Thompson bought Chichen Itza (as the ruins had no protected status then) and moved there with his Maya wife, and spent some 30 years doing amateur archeology there, including dredging the first artifacts out of the Sacred Cenote.

In 1924 the Carnegie Institution and Harvard University began a 20 year excavation project directed by Sylvanus G. Morley, which included restoring two sides of the Castillo. In 1961 the Sacred Cenote was dredged more thoroughly by Mexico`s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). In the 1980s INAH excavated some additional buildings and restored the other two sides of the Castillo.

Chichen Itza is today a World Heritage Site and is a very popular tourist destination; it is the most visited of the major Maya archaelogical sites. Many visitors to the popular tourist resort of Cancún make a day trip to Chichen Itza, usually with time to view only a portion of the site.

Cholula, Mexico, Lodging

Cholula is a city in the Mexican state of Puebla. The official, though little used, full name of the city is Cholula de Rivadavia. The city of Cholula is divided into two municipalities San Andrés Cholula and San Pedro Cholula which are considered to be part of the conurbation of the city of Puebla. Cholula is located about 15 km west of the city of Puebla, at an approximate elevation of 2135 meters (about 7000 ft) above sea level. The population of San Pedro Cholula is somewhat fewer than 100,000 people, and the population of San Andres Cholula, slightly less than 50,000.

Cholula is most famous as the site of the Great Pyramid of Cholula, the largest man-made structure by volume in the world. As part of the Puebla urban area, Cholula is famed locally for its lively night life. Its town centre and zócalo area are filled with a wide range of bars and restaurants that are popular with young people from local areas and especially from the nearby UDLA university.

Cholula, or in Nahuatl Chol?ll?n, was an important city of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, dating back to at least the 2nd century BC, with settlement as a village going back at least some thousand years earlier. Cholula was a major center contemporary with Teotihuacan and seems to have avoided, at least partially, that city`s fate of violent destruction at the end of the Mesoamerican Classic period. Cholula thus remained a regional center of importance, enough so that, at the time of the fall of the Aztec empire, Aztec princes were still formally anointed by a Cholulan priest in a manner reminiscent, and perhaps even analogous, to the way some Mayan princes appear to have come to Teotihuacan in search of some sort of formalization of their rulership.

At the time of the arrival of Hernán Cortés Cholula was second only to the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan (modern Mexico City) as the largest city in central Mexico, possibly with a population of up to 100,000 people. In addition to the great temple of Quetzalcoatl and various palaces, the city had 365 temples. During the Spanish Colonial period, however, Cholula was overtaken in importance by the nearby city of Puebla.

Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Lodging

Ciudad Juárez (also known simply as Juárez) (2000 population 1,142,354) is a city in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. It stands on the Rio Grande (Río Bravo del Norte), across the U.S. border from El Paso, Texas. It is the major port of entry and transportation center of north central Mexico and the fifth largest city in the country. It is a growing industrial center, with numerous maquiladoras (assembly plants).

Ciudad Juarez was founded as El Paso del Norte (the Northern Pass) in 1659 by Spanish explorers, seeking a route through the southern Rocky Mountains. The 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo established the Rio Grande as the border between Mexico and the United States, separating the settlements on the north bank of the river from the rest of the town.

Ciudad Juarez again served as a provisional Mexican capital during the initial phase of the Mexican Revolution, when forces loyal to opposition candidate Francisco I. Madero, led by Pancho Villa, seized the city on 20 November 1910. The scene of intense fighting for a decade, Juárez recovered during the United States Prohibition era (1919–1933) as an entertainment center. Juárez continued to attract tourists from the southwest USA during the 1940s and 1950s, with its bars, nightclubs, brothels, bullfighting, and shopping.

Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, Lodging

Coatzacoalcos is a major port city in the southern part of the Mexican state of Veracruz, on the Coatzacoalcos River. Coatzacoalcos comes from an indigenous word meaning `Site of the Snake` or `Where the snake hides`. The city serves as the municipal seat of the municipality of the same name.

The city is located at 18°09`N 94°26`W. It is connected by road and rail to the Pacific Ocean about 160 km away. This location has prompted plans for an interoceanic waterway or a much expanded railroad system for over a century. The municipality covers a surface area of 471.16 km² and, in the year 2000 census, reported a population of 267,212.

Although it is not known when the site was first inhabited it was already considered a provincial capital by the Olmecs. In 1522, Hernan Cortes orders Gonzalo de Sandoval to fund a settlement near Guazacualco. Sandoval named it Villa del Espíritu Santo. It was elevated to the category of Port in 1825 and the name changed to Coatzacoalco. In 1900 the name was changed to Puerto Mexico to make it easier for foreigners. In 1911 it was elevated to City, and in 1936 the name was changed to the current Coatzacoalcos.

Coatzacoalcos became a very important crossroads during the oil boom of the Seventies, connecting the Yucatan Peninsula and oil fields in Campeche to the rest of Mexico and to the Port of Salina Cruz in the Pacific. The industry is dominated by the petrochemical sector. Four big industrial petrochemical complexes are located near the city (Pajaritos, Cosoleacaque, Morelos and Cangrejera) making it one of the most important concentrations of its kind in the world. The state-owned Pemex Petroquímica is headquartered in Coatzacoalcos and 85% of its production is concentrated here.

Coba, Mexico, Lodging

Coba (Cobá in the Spanish language) is a large ruined city of the Pre-Columbian Maya civilization, located in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It is located about 90 km east of the Maya site of Chichen Itza, about 40 km west of the Caribbean Sea, and 44 km northwest of the site of Tulum, with which it is connected by a modern road.

Coba is located around five small lagoons. A series of elevated stone and plaster roads radiate from the central site to various smaller sites near and far. These are known by the Maya term sacbe (plural sacbeob). Some of these causeways go east to the Caribbean coast, and the longest runs over 100 km to the west to the site of Yaxuna. The site contains several large temple pyramids, the tallest, known as Nohoch Mul, being 42 meters in height.

A number of longer sacbeob, radiate out from Coba to other Maya sites in the area, the longest being over 100 km long, running west to the site of Yaxuna. Coba is estimated to have had some 50,000 inhabitants (and possibly significantly more) at its peak of civilization, and the built up area extends over some 80 square km. The site was occupied by a sizable agricultural population by the 1st century. The bulk of Coba`s major construction seems to have been made in the middle and late Classic period, about 500 to 900, with most of the dated hieroglypic inscriptions from the 7th century. However Coba remained an important site in the Post-Classic era and new temples were built and old ones kept in repair until at least the 14th century, possibly as late as the arrival of the Spanish.

Knowledge of this expansive site was never completely lost, but it was not examined by scholars until the 1920s. John Lloyd Stephens mentioned hearing reports of the site in 1841, but it was so distant from any known modern road or village that he decided the difficulty in trying to get there was too daunting. For much of the rest of the 19th century the area could not be visited by outsiders due to the Caste War of Yucatán. The site remained little visited due to its remoteness until the first modern road was opened up to Coba in the early 1970s. As a major resort was planned for Cancún, it was realized that clearing and restoring some of the large site could make it an important tourist attraction.

The Mexican National Institute of Anthropology & History began some archeological excavations in 1972 directed by Carlos Navarrete, and consolidated a couple buildings. At the start of the 1980s another road to Coba was opened up and paved, regular bus service begun, and a small Villas Archeologicas Hotel was opened up by the Club Med (with its own electric generator, since the village at Coba was otherwise without electricity). Today there is a resident population of 1,167 (2005 census).

Coba became a tourist destination shortly thereafter, with many visitors visiting the site on day trips from Cancún and the Riviera Maya. Only a small portion of the site has been cleared from the jungle and restored by archaeologists. Local guides are available at the entrance to the site, as well as bicycle rentals to get to some of the farther ruins within the archaeological zone. Coba, like all archaeological sites in Mexico open to the public via INAH, is free to visitors on Sundays and national holidays.

Colima, Mexico, Lodging

Colima is a state in western Mexico. It shares its name with its capital and main city, Colima, Colima.

Colima is a small state, sharing a border with the Mexican states of Jalisco to the north and east, and Michoacán to the south. To the west Colima borders the Pacific Ocean. In addition to the capital city of Colima, the state`s main cities include Manzanillo and Tecomán. The state has an area of 5,455 square km, with a population in 2005 census of 567,996 people.

Colima is one of the oldest cities in Mexico, after Veracruz, and Mexico City. The Colima airport is located in the municipality of Cuauhtemoc. Avolar, Aerocalifornia and Aerolitoral all offer service.

Following the fall of Tenochtitlan in 1521, the Spanish conquistadors were quick to reach the west coast. Colima`s native king (Spanish: Rey Colimán) organized the defense of his kingdom against the Spanish. In 1523 the conquistador Gonzalo de Sandoval founded the first Villa de Colima in Caxitlán, near modern-day Tecomán. However, poor settlement conditions resulted in the founding of the Villa San Sebastián de Colima in what is now the city of Colima. The new location provided a better climate, lands better suited to cultivation, and proximity to mining.

Cozumel, Mexico, Lodging

Cozumel (Mayan: Island of the Swallows) is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico`s Yucatán Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen. It is one of the eight municipalities (municipios) of the state of Quintana Roo and the easternmost municipality in Mexico. Cozumel is a popular tourist destination renowned for its scuba diving. The main town on the island is San Miguel.

The island is about 48 km (30 miles) north-south and 16 km (10 miles) east-west, and is the largest island of Mexico. It is about 20 km (12 miles) from the mainland, and some 60 km (36 miles) south of Cancún. Nearly everybody in Cozumel lives in the town of San Miguel (pop. 71,401 in 2005), which is on the western shore. The rest of the island is low, flat, and densely vegetated.

Scuba diving is still Cozumel`s primary draw, mainly due to the healthy coral reef marine communities. These coral reefs are protected from the open ocean by the island`s natural geography. In 1996, the government of Mexico also established the Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park, forbidding anyone from touching or removing any marine life within the park boundaries. Despite the importance of healthy reefs to Cozumel`s tourist trade, a deepwater pier was built in the 1990s for cruise ships to dock, causing damage to the reefs, and it is now a regular stop on cruises in the Caribbean.

To this day a historic festival is held in the small town of El Cedral, in the south of Cozumel Island at the end of April. This annual event is said to have been started over 150 years ago by Casimiro Cárdenas. Cárdenas was one of a group that fled to the island from the village of Saban, on the mainland, after an attack during the War of the Castes. The attackers killed many other villagers, but Cárdenas survived whilst clutching a small wooden cross.

Legend has it that Cárdenas vowed to start an annual festival wherever he settled, to honor the religious power of this crucifix. Today, the original Holy Cross Festival forms part of the wider Festival of El Cedral, which includes fairs, traditional feasts, rodeos, bullfights, music and competitions. The celebrations last about 5 days in all and are held every year at the end of April or beginning of May.

Guadalajara, Mexico, Lodging

Guadalajara is a large city in the Western-Pacific region of Mexico. Guadalajara is the capital of the state of Jalisco. During the Colonial era, Guadalajara became the capital of Nueva Galicia and after the Mexican War of Independence it became the capital of the Intendencia of Guadalajara. Guadalajara is the second oldest city in México (Charles V gave Guadalajara that title after being founded), and is consequently full of ancient buildings.

Catedral Metropolitana de Guadalajara, located on Avenida Alcalde (the main street), is the most important icon of the city, and seat of the Catholic Church in the State. Plaza de Armas: (Arms Square) On the south side of the Cathedral, is the main square and has been the scene of many important moments in Mexican History. Rotonda de los Hombres Ilustres: Located on the North side of the Cathedral, serves as a mausoleum for the most important politics, writers, artists and teachers born in the city. Plaza de La Liberación: (Freedom Square) On the East side of the Cathedral, serves as a multi-purpose location for outdoor shows, political campaigns and all sorts of cultural events. It receives its name from the fact that Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla abolished slavery while he was on the Palacio de Gobierno on the south side of the square. It`s surrounded by the Teatro Degollado, Palacio de Gobierno, Cathedral, the School of Music, the Church of Saint Agustin and the Supreme Court. Teatro Degollado: (Degollado Theater) Named after the Governor who ordered its construction, it`s the most important cultural reference on the city, built during the government of President Porfirio Díaz because of the lack of a proper city Theater. It hosted some of the most important events and parties of the pre-revolutionary Guadalajara, during the Mexican Belle-Epoque. Plaza Fundadores: (Founder`s Square) Behind the Teatro Degollado, it is the spot where the spanish gathered to found a new city they called Guadalajara; nowadays it serves as a reminder of the city`s Spanish heritage.

Teatro Diana: (Diana`s Theater) Formerly known as Cine Diana (Diana movie theater), it fell out of business in the 70`s and was left abandoned until in 2000 the Universidad de Guadalajara bought it and rebuilt it to create the largest theater in the city. Expo Guadalajara: Another building owned by the University, it is the largest and most modern multipurpose area. Every year in November it hosts the FIL (International Book Fair), and in April it hosts Papirolas (a children-oriented fair). It`s located a few blocks from Plaza del Sol, Guadalajara`s World Trade Center and across the street from the Guadalajara Expo Hilton.

Plaza del Sol: (Sun`s Plaza) The largest outdoor mall in the city, it`s located on one of the main economic centers of the city. Torrena: Located next to Plaza del Sol, it will open in 2007 as the largest commercial and cultural center in the city. The Minerva: A monument on the center of a fountain, with an oversized calendar made out of flowers, it welcomes tourists coming from Zapopan, and guards the Arcos de Guadalajara, one of the main entrances to the city, located on Avenida Vallarta. The main figure is a giant representation of Minerva with full armor on, holding a spear and a shield with Medusa`s Head. It also becomes the hotspot where Football (Soccer) fans (both young and old) converge whenever the Mexican National Team or the local Chivas Rayadas del Guadalajara score a key victory.

Galerias Guadalajara: Finished in 2004, it`s the largest, most modern shopping mall in the city. It`s frequented by the young social elite (several high-class neighborhoods are located in the area) and emulates American shopping malls and holds multiple brands of clothing, food and home accessories.

Tianguis Cultural: An outdoor market where `diversity` is the keyword. People form all different backgrounds (mostly teenagers) gather outside the Agua Azul (a local park) and sell their artifacts (mostly handmade) for all kinds of social groups. Dolls, posters, clothes, accessories, cd`s, dvd`s, body jewelry and even tattoos are easily bought and traded here. Frequented mostly by the middle-class, almost everybody can find something unique to buy and scene or clique differences are not an issue.

Guanajuato, Mexico, Lodging

Guanajuato is the name of both a state in Mexico and that state`s capital city. The Mexican city of Guanajuato is the capital of the state of the same name. It is located 370 km (230 miles) northwest of Mexico City, at an elevation of 1,996 m (6,550 ft) above sea level. The estimated population in 2003 was about 78,000 people.

Guanajuato was founded as a town in 1554 and received the designation as a city in 1741. It is located in one of the richest silver mining areas of Mexico, and is well known for its wealth of fine colonial era Spanish architecture. The historic town and adjacent mines are a World Heritage Site.

The city was originally built over a river, which flowed through tunnels underneath the city. However, after years of raising buildings to accommodate repeated flooding, in the mid-twentieth century, engineers built a dam and redirected the river into underground caverns. The tunnels were lit and paved with cobblestones for automobile traffic, and this underground road network carries the majority of cars driving through the city today. It is one of the most noticeable features of the city.

In the Panteón catacombs to the west of the city is a famous cemetery noted for the natural mummies produced by unknown means. About 1 in 100 bodies buried here experience natural mummification. In the late 1800s the town instituted a burial tax for the families of the deceased. When some of the poorest families were unable to pay the tax, their relatives were dug up and placed on public view in a purpose-built museum. The `Guanajuato Mummy Museum` still adds corpses to this day; two children were added who died in 1984 most recently due to their relatives failure to pay the $20 per 5 year rental fee. The museum holds 111 corpses resting on velvet pillows. Today, it is reported that the proceeds from the museum help fund the city`s coffers to a considerable degree.

Hermosillo, Mexico, Lodging

Hermosillo is the capital of the state of Sonora, Mexico. It is centrally located within the state and is within several hundred miles of several other major Mexican cities, such as Tijuana and Mexicali, and U.S. cities such as Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona. The city`s estimated 2004 population was 689,902. The city is served by Ignacio L. Pesqueira International Airport (airport code HMO). The city also has an American Basketball Association team, the Hermosillo Seris.

Industry is an important part of the city`s economy. 114 companies have plants in the city, employing thousands of workers. Ford Motor Company has a plant there, assembling the Ford Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr and the Mercury Milan.

Centered on the Plaza Zaragoza, Hermosillo`s origin traces back to 1700, when several villages were founded on lands previously inhabited by Native Americans. It came to be named the Villa de Pitic, but on September 5, 1828, it was renamed Hermosillo in honor of general José María González de Hermosillo who in 1810 fought for the independence of México in the state of Sinaloa. On April 26, 1879, the city was named the capital of Sonora, and that declaration was confirmed in article 28 of the state constitution, written on September 15, 1917.

The latter half of the 1800s were turbulent years for the city – on October 14, 1852, Gastón Rousset Boulbón led anti-government fighters to victory against the national army, but soon left the city. On May 4, 1866, republican troops under Ángel Martínez took the city from imperial forces under Jose María Tranquilino Almada. Just a few hours later, however, the imperialists retook the city. Later that year, a similar taking and retaking of the city occurred. Even during this time, the city continued developing – on November 4, 1881, a rail line between Hermosillo and the city of Guaymas went into operation, and by the end of the 19th Century, the city had a population of 14,000 and thriving commerce and agriculture.

During the Mexican revolution, Hermosillo was the capital of Mexico for five months, as it was the location of the meeting of Venustiano Carranza`s war cabinet. Later, on November 18, 1915, the city was attacked by Francisco Villa, another Mexican revolutionary, but he was defeated.

Hidalgo de Parral, Mexico, Lodging

Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua is located in the southwestern part of the state, 220 km from the state capital Chihuahua, Chih. Its population is approximately 90,000. The city was founded in 1631 by Juan Rangel de Biesma.

Parral was once a bustling center for silver mining. As early as 1567, the silver mines at Santa Barbara were established in the territory of the Conchos Indians. However, in 1631, a vast new silver strike was made in what is now southern Chihuahua. The strike in Parral led to a large influx of Spaniards and Indian laborers into the area of Tarahumara country north of Santa Barbara. However, the steadily increasing need for labor in the Parral mines, according to Professor Spicer, led to the forcible recruitment, or enslavement, of non-Christian Indians... the influx of new people and the resulting development of Spanish society no doubt placed increased pressure upon the native population in the region.

The large area of southern Chihuahua inhabited by the Conchos Indians included the highway between the mining districts of Parral, Cusihuiriachic, and Chihuahua.` After the end of the silver mining boom, Parral was almost completely abandoned in the early 1930s (although the surrounding district continues to be mined for silver and base metals.) It is now a small city mainly dedicated to commerce.

Parral is noted as the place of death of several historical figures, including Mexican revolutionary leader Pancho Villa, who was assassinated on July 20, 1923 and initially buried there, and border ruffian `Dirty` Dave Rudabaugh, a sometime friend and foe of Billy the Kid.

Isla Mujeres, Mexico, Lodging

Isla Mujeres is the name of a small island, as well as the town on that island, a short distance off the coast of the north east of the Yucatan Peninsula in the Caribbean Sea. Isla Mujeres is one of the eight municipalities of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It is about 13 km north east of Cancún. The island is some 7 km long and 650 meters wide. In 2000 it had a population of about 10,000. By 2005 there were 121 taxis, 500 golf cars, and 1500 moped scooters.

In Pre-Columbian times the island was sacred to the Maya Moon Goddess, Ix Chel. When the Spanish arrived here in the 16th century they named it Isla Mujeres meaning Island of Women, because of the many cult images of the Moon Goddess here.

There was a small Mayan temple on the south tip of the island, but in 1988 Hurricane Gilbert caused tremendous damage to it leaving most of the foundation and a very small portion of the temple on it.

Since the 1970s there has been substantial development for tourism here. Ferry boats run every half hour during daylight between Isla Mujeres and Puerto Juarez or Puerto Cancún on the mainland.

Isla Mujeres is located close to one of the many coral reefs. The area is popular for its snorkeling and scuba diving.

Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Mexico, Lodging

Unlike any other Mexican beach resort destination, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo comprises two entirely different places with distinct lifestyles. In Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo you will get two destinations for the price of one.

Zihuatanejo is a small town, which nowadays still conserves the typical physiognomy and the friendly atmosphere of the old fishing village with that True Mexican Flavor. Many of the downtown streets are still cobblestones paved and the remodeled ones, with an imitation of these stones. Most of the constructions have that tropical-coastal look.

There are many cozy restaurants, boutiques, jewelry stores, bars, hotels (from one to five stars), tourist markets, and much more. You won`t see any tall buildings (four stories maximum) because they are not permitted by a City Law (the purpose is to conserve the village look).

Ixtapa is a modern world-class resort that was created from the ground-up beginning in 1968. Ixtapa has all-modern construction, vast and well kept gardens and a large residential area that is located away from the hotel zone. Its bay is wide and it is one of the places to admire a spectacular sunset.

Jalapa, Mexico, Lodging

Jalapa (or Xalapa) is the capital city of the Mexican state of Veracruz. In the year 2005 census, it reported a population of 413,196. The municipal seat of Jalapa is the city of Xalapa de Enríquez, named in honor of the gobernador (governor) Juan de la Luz Enriquez. In everyday usage, however, the city is generally referred to by the shorter name Jalapa. It was called La ciudad de las flores (City of Flowers) by Alexander Von Humboldt.

Its name comes from the Nahuatl roots Xalli (sand) and Apan (water place), which approximately means spring in the sand. The spelling Xalapa (like the word México) reflects archaic spelling. Jalapa (like Méjico) is modernized and is used mostly by foreigners.

Jalapa is also known as the Athens of Veracruz because of the strong cultural influence of its three major universities, Universidad Veracruzana (the main public university in the State of Veracruz), Universidad de Xalapa and Universidad Anáhuaca de Xalapa, and also for the wide variety of cultural events in Jalapa like its theater, museums, and street art. Jalapa also has the widest collection of Diego Rivera`s paintings in all Mexico, at a gallery called Pinacoteca Diego Rivera, nearby City Hall and Parque Juárez in the downtown area.

In folklore, the Spaniards believed that Jalapa was the birthplace and home of the Florecita (literally little flower), the most beautiful woman in the world. Even today, some people continue to adhere to this belief, and some natives insist that it is not a legend. Jalapeño chilis are named after an old factory of canned chile pepper called La jalapeña located in this city.

Juarez, Mexico, Lodging

The population of León is mainly mestizo (about 70 percent), white (15 percent), indigenous (10 percent), and other, largely the fast-growing Asian – mainly Korean population (5 percent).

León was inhabited in pre-hispanic times by diverse native groups, such as the Toltecs, chichimecas, guamares, among others. The archaeological sites of Alfaro and Ibarrilla, close to the city of León, reveal that the oldest settlements of this zone date from Preclassical times.

The city of León was founded January 20, 1576 with the name Villa de Leon, by the order of the Virrey Don Martín Enríquez de Almaza, for the purpose of creating a defense against the attacks of the chichimecas. Mazatlan, Mexico, Lodging

Mazatlán is a city in the Mexican state of Sinaloa; the surrounding municipality, for which the city serves as the municipal seat, is also called Mazatlán. It is located on the Pacific coast, just across from the southernmost tip of the Baja California peninsula.

Mazatlan is a Nahuatl word meaning place of the deer. The city was founded in the 1820s. By the mid-1800s, a large group of immigrants had arrived from Germany. These new citizens developed Mazatlan into a thriving commercial seaport, importing equipment for the nearby gold and silver mines. It served as the capital of Sinaloa from 1859 to 1873.

Mazatlan, with a population of 340,000 as of 2000, is the second-largest city in the state and Mexico`s largest commercial port. It is also a popular tourist destination, its beaches lined with resort hotels. A car ferry plies its trade across the Gulf of California from Mazatlán to La Paz, Baja California Sur.

Every year, Carnival is celebrated during the week before Ash Wednesday. There are a lot of festivities, including the election of a Queen, parades, and balls. This is the third largest Mardi Gras in the world, behind the celebrations held in Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans.

Merida, Mexico, Lodging

Mérida is the capital city of the Mexican state of Yucatán. It is located in the northwest part of the state, about 35 km (22 miles) from the Gulf of Mexico coast. In 2003 the population was about 793,000, ranking 11th among the most populous Mexican cities.

Mérida is served by Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport.

Merida is located in the Northwest part of the state of Yucatan, which occupies the northern portion of the Yucatan peninsula. To the east is the state of Quintana Roo, to the west is the state of Campeche, to the north is the Gulf of Mexico, and far to the south is the state of Chiapas. Yucatan has a very flat topography and is situated very near sea level. The land outside of Merida is covered with smaller scrub trees and former henequen fields. Almost no surface water exists, but several cenotes (underground rivers) are found across the state.

Merida itself is centered around a downtown centro typical of colonial Spanish cities. The street grid is based on odd-numbered streets running east/west and even-numbered streets running north/south, with calles 60 and 61 bounding the Plaza Grande in the heart of the city. The more affluent neighborhoods are located to the north and the most densely populated areas are to the south. The Centro area is becoming increasingly popular with American and other ex-pats who are rescuing and restoring the classic colonial structures.

Mérida is nicknamed The White City, both for a common color of its buildings and the fact that the residents keep the city particularly clean.

Merida was named after the Spanish town of the same name, originally (in Latin) Augusta Emerita. It is located in the approximate epicenter of the Chicxulub Crater. Mérida served as the American Capital of Culture in the year 2000. The city is full of exquisite art galleries as well as the inevitable tourist shops. The main thoroughfare, Paseo de Montejo, is lined with original sculpture by up-and-coming local and foreign artists, as part of an exhibit.

Mérida and the state of Yucatan are somewhat isolated from the rest of the country, and it shows in many things. The conquistadors found the Mayan culture to be incredibly resilient, and their attempts to eradicate Mayan tradition, religion and culture had only moderate success. Many inhabitants today are Mayan descendants. The surviving remnants of the Mayan culture can be seen everyday, in speech, dress, and in both written and oral histories. It is especially apparent in holidays like Hanal Pixan, a Mayan/Catholic Day of the Dead celebration. It falls on November 1 and 2 (one day for adults, and one for children) and is commemorated by elaborate altars dedicated to dead relatives. It is a compromise between the two religions with crucifixes mingled with skull decorations and food sacrifices/offerings.

Mexico City, Mexico, Lodging

Mexico City (Spanish: Ciudad de México) is the name of a megacity located in the Valley of Mexico (Valle de México), a large valley in the high plateaus (altiplano) at the center of Mexico, about 2,240 meters (7,349 feet) above sea-level, surrounded on most sides by volcanoes towering at 4,000 to 5,500 meters (13,000 to 18,000 feet) above sea-level.

Mexico City was originally a municipality founded in 1521 by Cortés in the middle of the now drained Lake Texcoco on the ruins of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire, and its lesser-known twin city Tlatelolco. The municipality was abolished in 1928, and the name Mexico City can now refer to two things.

Officially, the name Ciudad de México is used by the Distrito Federal (D.F.). The D.F. is a federal district serving as the capital of Mexico and which is administered by the Mexican Federal Government. The D.F. encompasses the historical center of Mexico City, but is much larger than the historical municipality of Mexico City abolished in 1928. The urbanized area of Mexico City covers only the north of the D.F., while the south of the D.F. is made up of rural areas and mountains. Although the D.F. is not a municipality, the name Ciudad de México is used by Mexican authorities as a synonym for Distrito Federal (such as in Article 44 of the Mexican Constitution).

In a broader meaning, Mexico City refers to the whole metropolitan area of Greater Mexico City. The metropolitan area extends beyond the limits of the D.F. and encompasses tens of independent municipalities located in the State of México (Estado de México), to the north, east, and west of the D.F., extending as far north as the State of Hidalgo. The population of the entire metropolitan area in 2005 is estimated between 18 and 22 million inhabitants (depending where the limits of the metropolitan area are set). This means Mexico City is the third or fourth most populated metropolitan area in the world (behind Tokyo, New York, and possibly Seoul, depending which data is compared).

Mexico City, with its distinct mestizo culture, blending native Indian (Nahuatl) and Spanish heritages, has in recent decades become one of the great financial, economic, educational, cultural, and tourist centers of the world.

Famous landmarks in Mexico City include the Zócalo, the main central square with its time clashing Spanish-era Cathedral, modern-times Palacio Nacional, and ancient Aztec temple ruins. (The Templo Mayor was found in the early 1900s while digging to place underground electric cables.) The trademark golden Angel of Independence found on the wide, elegant avenue Paseo de la Reforma, modeled by the order of president Porfirio Díaz after the Champs-Élysées in Paris. The Avenida de los Insurgentes, locally said to be the longest street in the world, goes 28.8 km (18 miles) from end to end of the city.

The Chapultepec park houses the Chapultepec Palace museum on a hill that overlooks the park and its numerous museums, monuments and the national zoo; the National Museum of Anthropology (which houses the Aztec Calendar Stone), the Bellas Artes Fine Arts Palace which is a stunning white marble theater/museum whose weight is such that it has gradually been sinking into the soft ground below, the Plaza of the Three Cultures in the Tlatelolco neighborhood, and the shrine and Basilicas of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

In addition, the city has around 160 museums, over 100 art galleries, and some 30 concert halls. In many locales (The Palacio Nacional and the Instituto Nacional de Cardiología to name a few), there are murals by Diego Rivera. He and his wife Frida Kahlo lived in the southern suburb of Coyoacán, where several of their homes, studios, and collections are open to the public. Nearby is the house of Leon Trotsky, where he was murdered in 1940.

Monterrey, Mexico, Lodging

Monterrey is the capital city of the Mexican state of Nuevo León. The city of Monterrey is located in northeastern Mexico, in the state of Nuevo León; it has about 1.1 million inhabitants, although the Greater Monterrey metropolitan area (composed of the municipios) of San Pedro Garza García, San Nicolás de los Garza, Apodaca, Guadalupe, Escobedo, Santa Catarina, Garcia, Juarez, Santiago, Ciénega de Flores, Salinas Victoria and Pesqueria) add another 2.5 million (total 2006 pop. est: 3.6 million) distributed on 572.8 km² making Monterrey`s metropolitan area the third most populous in Mexico but the second largest and most important urban area after the capital.

The Santa Catarina river bisects the city. Although this river is dry for most of the year, it flows after occasional heavy rains.

Monterrey, also known as La Ciudad de las Montañas (City of the Mountains), has the second highest GDP per capita in Latin America, next to Mexico City. It lays at the foothill of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range, which seems to come to an abrupt start south of the city, i.e. the famous peak La Eme (the M) in San Pedro Garza García.

The mountains around Monterrey harbor an almost endless number of canyons, trails and roads, crossing deserts and forests. These trails vary in their difficulty from supereasy to those for the expert rockclimber only.

Monterrey is a major industrial center among cities in Mexico, second only to the nation`s capital. As a result of its strong steel industry, it is often called the Pittsburgh of Mexico. The city has prominent positions in sectors such as steel, cement, glass, auto parts, and beer. In 1999 Fortune magazine voted Monterrey as the best city in Latin America in which to do business. The magazine attributes its economic wealth in part to its proximity with the United States-Mexican border and mentions Monterrey as a significant city with economic links to the United States.

Morelia, Mexico, Lodging

Morelia is the capital of the state of Michoacán in Mexico. The city is located in the region of the Guayangareo valley, surrounded by the Punhuato and Quinceo hills. In 2003 the estimated population was 568,700 people.

The city`s Historic Downtown Area is a UN designated World Heritage Site, and houses many beautiful colonial buildings and churches.

The Historic Downtown Area (Centro Historico de Morelia) encompasses approximately 150 city blocks at the city center, roughly corresponding to the urban area of the city at the end of the XVIII century. The Centro Historico is a treat to the eyes containing over 1,000 historical buildings and sites. It is wonderfully clean and has many attractions for tourists. One of the main attractions for tourists is the Catedral de Morelia. Also interesting is the Casa del Arte where you can find a large variety of high quality artisanal works. There are several other churches in town with beautiful interiors including the Templo de las Rosas annex to the Conservatorio de las Rosas, which are both examples of baroque architecture, and the Templo de San Diego (also known as Santuario de Guadalupe), with a stunning artisanal retablo that is a late reinterpretation of Rococo style using indigenous colors and techniques.

The monumental aqueduct, built in colonial days to bring water into town, was functional through 1910. The inner city is built of reddish sandstone, lending the city a unique character among Mexico`s many noteworthy colonial cities and giving origing to the name Ciudad de las Canteras Rosas that is sometimes used in referrence to Morelia.

At the southern edge of the city is the beautiful mountain range called Santa Maria, which houses some of the best (and most expensive) residential districts, private sector schools and universities. The main university is the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, founded in 1551 under the name of Colegio de San Nicolás by Vasco de Quiroga, first bishop of Michoacán, and is one of the oldest universities in America, and one of the most importants public universities of Mexico.

Due to its many universities, Morelia has a large student population and has become an increasingly popular destination for foreigners wishing to study Spanish language and Latin American culture.

It borders with the northernmost part of Distrito Federal, and it is part of the Mexico City Metropolitan Area, which is the second largest Metropolitan Area of the world.

The Tlatilcan culture arrived to the lands of Naucalpan between the years 1700 to 600 BC. By 1400 BC the area had great influence and presence of Otomi groups, and was called Otocampulco (on the place of Otomies).

The Chichimecan culture arrived between the years 1000 and 1200, and built the pyramid now known as Pirámide del Conde, as it was found during the construction of a residential area of the same name. In 1428 the territory was claimed by the Tepanecan empire of Azcapotzalco, but after being defeated by the Mexican Triple Alliance the territory was given to the kingdom of Tlacopan, which later became known as Tacuba. Heroica Nogales, more commonly known as Nogales, is a city in the extreme north of the Mexican state of Sonora. It covers an area of 1675 km², and is bordered to the north by the city of Nogales, Arizona, United States, across the U.S.-Mexico border. In 2000, the census reported that Nogales had a population of 159,103 people, representing approximately 50% growth from 1990.

This population growth is in part due to the influx of industry that came as a result of NAFTA and the maquiladora industry. Manufacturing now accounts for 55% of the city`s gross domestic product, and services are growing as well.

Nogales is known for its recent enormous population growth which covers the hills along the central narrow valley that extends from South to North. Dispersed among the houses, the visitor will find a mixture of factories, stores, etc. However, recently, the southern half of the city has experienced a modern urbanization development which includes shopping malls, wide avenues, and modern house conglomerates.

Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, Lodging

Nuevo Laredo is a city in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. Its population is about 500,000.

It stands on the U.S.-Mexico border, connected to Laredo, Texas, across the Rio Grande (Rio Bravo) river by three international bridges. The city is larger than its U.S. counterpart, but is younger, having been established after the state of Texas broke away from Mexico. It is the largest inland port in Mexico, as is its counterpart across the border.

Most of the main area of Nuevo Laredo (between Cesar Lopez de Lara avenue, the Rio Grande, and south to Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard) is a landscaped, typical busy Mexican city with several gardens and plazas. There are many cybercafes throughout the city.

Tourist permits are not required if visiting Nuevo Laredo only. They are required if going further south (more than 15 miles). Tourist permits are good for six months usually. To purchase them it is neccesary to show either a passport, voter`s card or birth certificate (originals only). Travelers will pass the Mexican customs twice: at the bridge, and at the checkpoint 20 miles from the border.

If driving, at the bridge tourists might be asked to pull over for an inspection if they get a red light as they pass by (this is supposed to pick up people randomly for inspection). It is necessary to buy a tourist permit (about $20 US); there was a permit office right at the customs as you cross the bridge, on the right. Otherwise, go to the large complex *under* the old (downtown or number 1) bridge on Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard, right by the river. If crossing through the downtown bridge, take a left right where the customs end, drive for four blocks though a gloomy neighborhood, take another left and get on the far, far-right lane of Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard. This lane goes under the bridge, close to the river, to the permit complex.

American cars need to get a permit (window sticker) too, to be driven south of Nuevo Laredo. The car and car title must be shown to get this permit (at the same facility under the bridge, as described above), and the person`s whose name is on the title must be present. Car permits must be surrendered also when leaving the country. Mexican authorities try hard to avoid American cars flooding the country, to keep alive car manufacturing in Mexico.

Oaxaca, Mexico, Lodging

The city of Oaxaca, Oaxaca (formally: Oaxaca de Juárez, in honor of 19th-century president and national hero Benito Juárez, who was born nearby) is the capital and main city of the Mexican state of the same name. It is located in the Oaxaca Valley in the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains, at 17°07?N 96°72?W and an altitude of about 1550 m (5000 feet). The important Monte Albán archaeological site is close to the city. In 2003 the estimated population was 259,600 people.

There have been Zapotec and Mixtec settlements in the general area of the modern city of Oaxaca for thousands of years, in connection with the important ancient centres of Monte Albán and Mitla. The colonial city, however, dates from 1532, when Spanish settlers who had followed Hernán Cortés` conquistadores successfully petitioned the Queen of Spain for a grant of land. They had already founded a city in the neighbourhood, under the name of Antequera, on the basis of a charter from King Carlos V of Spain, but Cortés had successfully sought to have the entire Valle de Oaxaca declared as part of his personal marquisate, and to have the settlers removed. The queen`s charter however secured the townspeople`s rights, and the modern city grew up within and around the one-league square that they were granted.

The historic centre of the city is laid out in typical Spanish colonial style, with a rectangular grid of streets surrounding a central square, the zócalo. Most of the important buildings are within this central area.

Oaxaca is far more than a tourist destination, and tourism does not dominate the city`s life. Nonetheless, it does have a significant tourist trade, based on its numerous baroque churches and religious buildings (many of which have recently been restored), its proximity to Monte Albán, the ready availability of attractive local craft products in its markets and in nearby villages, and on a reputation for a relaxed style of life and friendly and courteous local population. It has a very wide range of cafés and restaurants, many of them specializing in the distinctive regional cuisine with some claiming to be among the best in Mexico. Mole Negro, Rojo and Coloradito are cocoa-based sauces, with over fifty additional ingredients, that are among the main claims to culinary fame.

Oaxaca-Xoxocotlan airport (IATA code OAX) is approximately 10 km south of the city centre. Most flights are to Mexico City for onward connection, but there are also flights to Huatulco, Cancún, Cancún, Tuxtla Gutierrez and Tijuana. Continental flights between Oaxaca and Houston have also been initiated.

The city has separate first class and second class bus stations, offering services to most places within the state of Oaxaca, including the coastal resorts of Huatulco, Puerto Escondido, Puerto Ángel and Pinotepa Nacional, and also long-distance services to Puebla and Mexico City and other Mexican locations such as Veracruz.

Orizaba, Mexico, Lodging

Orizaba is a city in the Mexican state of Veracruz. It is located 20 km west of its sister city Córdoba, and is adjacent to Río Blanco and Ixtaczoquitlán, on Federal Highways 180 and 190.

The name Orizaba comes from a Hispanized pronunciation of the Nahuatl (Aztecan) name Ahuilizapan, which means (more or less) `place of playing waters`. The town lies at 1200 m. (4000 ft.), at the confluence of the Río Blanco with several tributaries, including the Río Orizaba, near the mouth of a large valley heading westward into the eastern Sierra Madre.

This location, at the bottom of the ascent into the mountains, is an important transition point along what has been for centuries the main trade route between Mexico City and Veracruz on the Gulf Coast. The climate is generally pleasant, though often cloudy and rainy, and the soil of the Orizaba valley is extraordinarily fertile. Overlooking the valley from the north is the Pico de Orizaba, a volcano that, at 5700 m. (18,700 ft.), is the highest mountain in Mexico and third highest in North America.

Pachuca, Mexico, Lodging

Pachuca (elevation: 2,426 meters) is the capital of the Mexican state of Hidalgo. Pachuca is said to be the cradle of Mexican soccer. Workers from Cornwall, England, who came to work Pachuca`s silver mines brought the game along with them, and founded the local soccer club CF Pachuca. Many examples of English architecture still exist.

Pachuca is not much of a tourist city, but there are a few things to see.

The `Reloj Monumental` (Monumental clock) is the central clock tower, build in 1904 in the city center. There is also the `Central Cultural Hidalgo,` which is housed in an old monastery and contains museums, a theater, a library, and a gallery. Finally, there is the `Museo Nacional de la Fotografía,` a fascinating museum of Mexican photography.

Pachuca`s regional food is the `paste` (pas-tay), a pocket sandwich stuffed with hamburger, potatoes, or various other foods. This reflects the Cornish influence in the area.

Palenque, Mexico, Lodging

Palenque is a Maya archeological site near the Usumacinta River in the Mexican state of Chiapas, about 130 km south of Ciudad del Carmen. It is a medium-sized site, much smaller than such huge sites as Tikal or Copán, but it contains some of the finest architecture, sculpture, and stucco reliefs the Maya produced.

The site was already long abandoned when the Spanish arrived in Chiapas. The first European to visit the ruins and publish an account was Father Pedro Lorenzo de la Nada in 1567; at the time the local Chol Maya called it Otolum meaning `Land with strong houses,` de la Nada roughly translated this into Spanish to give the site the name Palenque, meaning fortification.

Palenque is perhaps the most studied and written about of Maya sites.

Juan Galindo visited Palenque in 1831, and filed a report with the Central American government. He was the first to note that the figures depicted in Palenque`s ancient art looked like the local Native Americans; some other early explorers, even years later, attributed the site to such distant peoples as Egyptians, Polynesians, or the Lost Tribes of Israel.

In 1973 the first of the very productive Palenque Mesa Redondas (Round tables) was held here on the inspiration of Merle Green Robertson; thereafter every few years leading Mayanists would meet at Palenque to discuss and examine new findings in the field. Meanwhile Robertson was conducting a detailed examination of all art at Palenque, including recording all the traces of color on the sculpture.

The 1970s also saw a small museum built at the site.

In the last 15 or 20 years, a great deal more of the site has been excavated, but currently, archaeologists estimate that only 5% of the total city has been uncovered.

Patzcuaro, Mexico, Lodging

Pátzcuaro, which means place of stones in the Purepecha language, is a city in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. It is located at 19°51`N 101°61`W, about an hour drive between Morelia and Uruapan and 20 minutes drive to the artists town of Erongaricuaro. The estimated population is about 45,000 people.

Pátzcuaro was founded in 1540. The city was developed as a religious center, and its early inhabitants believed Pátzcuaro to be the doorway to heaven where the gods ascended and descended. The Purepecha people first settled in Pátzcuaro in 1324, led by Rey Curateme. It has always been of interest to Mexican history buffs because it was central to the careers of two diametrically opposed characters in Mexico`s colonial past. The first was Nuño Guzmán de Beltrán, the vicious conquistador who plundered the area for gold.

Pátzcuaro is hidden high in the mountains of Michoacán at 2200 m (7130 feet) of elevation. It is veiled from the outside world by a curtain of high pine trees. To the north is Lake Pátzcuaro, one of Mexico`s highest lakes. The butterfly fishermen, who dip their nets into the lake in search of whitefish, have become a trademark of Pátzcuaro.

The town retains its ancient atmosphere. It consists of largely one-story adobe or plaster-over-brick buildings with red tile roofs. The streets are dusty cobblestones traveled by horse and car. Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, known by locals as simply the Plaza Grande, is Pátzcuaro`s central square. Grass covers much of the plaza, and a statue of Vasco de Quiroga stands in its center.

On the east side of downtown is the beautiful Basilica of Our Lady of Health, the city`s patron, built between 1546 and 1554. The College of Saint Nicolas, south from the basilica, was founded by Don Vasco in 1540 and now houses the Museum of Popular Arts and Archaeology, which has exhibits of carvings, pottery, weaving, and archaeological artifacts. The Cathedral of Michoacán was built by Don Vasco and was opened in 1546. Today it is the temple of the Jesuits. The House of Eleven Patios is the former monastery of Saint Catherine, founded by Dominican nuns in 1747. It is now a center for local artisans, and you can watch them work.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico, Lodging

Playa del Carmen is a city on the coast of the Caribbean Sea in the north east of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, located at 20.62° North, 87.07° West. The city is the seat of the Solidaridad municipality. In 2003 the city had a population of about 49,000 people, though it is rapidly growing in population.

Tourism to this little city began with the passenger ferry service to Cozumel, an island across the Cozumel Channel and world-famous scuba diving destination. While passing through, many people realized that it was a nice place to relax away from the crowds of Cancún but with the same quality beaches and turquoise waters.

While not as incredible as Cozumel, Playa del Carmen`s coast offers some good scuba diving opportunities, as well as cenote diving for the more adventurous.

Today Playa del Carmen, or just `Playa` as locals like to call the city, is the center of the Riviera Maya concept, which covers from Cancún to Tulum and the Sian Ka`an biosphere reserve. All activity centers on the Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, located just one block inland from the beach, and lined with boutique hotels, shops, and small restaurants.

Puebla, Mexico, Lodging

The city of Puebla – known more formally as Heróica Puebla de Zaragoza or less formally as La Angelópolis or Puebla de los Ángeles – is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of the same name, and the fourth largest city in Mexico, after Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey respectively.

Puebla is located in the Puebla Valley, surrounded by volcanoes and snow-capped mountains, slightly over 110 kilometres south-east of Mexico City. The city itself has a population of 2,000,000 people, while its metropolitan area has a population of 2,600,000.

The historic center of the city still contains much Spanish Colonial architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In recent years some of the historical buildings have been restored while others, however, are in a state of disrepair.

Of all the colonial buildings, the most impressive are without any doubt the Puebla Cathedral, which was built in a mixed neoclassical style; the gold-covered Rosario Chapel is a dramatic example of Mexican baroque.

Important tourism locations include La Capilla del Rosario, a chapel inlaid with gold, El Barrio del Artista (The Artist`s Neighborhood) where local arts are produced and the Centro y Zócalo (downtown) where the Cathedral and the Palacio Municipal are located.

Red double-decker buses, known as turibuses, give tourists an opportunity to enjoy the city`s architecture, museums and monuments located at the historical downtown. On of the most famous museums in the city is the Amparo Museum. Another tourist attraction is the Africam Safari zoo, intended to recreate a safari experience.

Also, worth visiting is the pyramid of Cholula, a city within the metropolitan area of Puebla. Cholula was one of the most important cities under the Aztec empire, and its pyramid is the largest in the New World. The town, with a population of only 200,000 inhabitants, is said to boast a church for every day of the year, albeit some churches are quite small and even makeshift.
