La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, Mexico, is a small city on the shores of the Gulf of California. It is located on the south end of the Bay of La Paz. As of 2000, the city had a population of some 163,000 people. La Paz is served by Manuel Márquez de León International Airport.
It is between the coastal range and a bay, and is a seaport. Industries include silver mining, agriculture, fishing and pearls. Tourism is also an important source of employment for this coastal community.
Adventure aficionados have known the magic of La Paz for years, but Southern Baja’s outdoor hotspot is for more than just accomplished outdoorsmen and women. The bayside town about 80 miles north of Cabo San Lucas on Highway 1 is bursting with opportunities for exploration — outside and inside.
Although the most obvious attraction is the turquoise bay of La Paz and the restaurant-speckled malecón that curves around the shore, the city itself offers a host of diversions. By day, cultural tours through the city’s historic district introduce travelers to a centuries-old cathedral, the charming main square and the local museum. By night, restaurants and clubs come alive with some of the best seafood in Baja, live music and a laid-back ambience that is hard to come by in the twin capes to the South.
