San Juan del Río is a city (1990 pop. 61,652) and administrative seat of the surrounding municipality (municipio) of the same name in the central Mexican state of Querétaro.

It is located on the country`s central plateau (altiplano), 127 km (79 miles) south-east of state capital Santiago de Querétaro, at 20°23`N 99°59`W and an elevation of 1,978 metres (6,490 ft). The city was founded on the Feast of Saint John the Baptist June 24, 1531 by Fernado de Tapia, an Otomí chieftain that converted to Catholicism and dropped his Native name Conín. San Juan was one of the first Spanish settlements outside the Valley of Mexico and thus marked the beginning of the colonisation of Northern and Wester Mexico, including the city of Querétaro which was founded one month later. The settlement became important since it was an obliged stop en route to the rich mining regions of Guanajuato, Zacatecas and San Luis Potosí.

San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Lodging

The city of San Luis Potosí is the capital of the Mexican state of the same name. San Luis Potosí is located in the south-central part of San Luis Potosí state at 22.16°N, 100.98°W. In 1995 the city had a population of 828,366. The 2000 census recorded a population of 1,000,075 for greater San Luis Potosí, which includes the neighboring municipality of Soledad de G. S. The city, at an elevation of 6,157 feet, is a thousand feet higher than Denver, Colorado.

A Franciscan Mission was established here in 1583, and the city founded in 1592. The city grew rapidly thanks to the rich gold and silver mines in the era, the source of Mexican treasure that loaded the Manila galleons. The area was named Potosí in reference to the fabulously rich mines of Potosí, Bolivia, discovered some forty years earlier.

For a time in 1863 during the French invasion of Mexico, San Luis Potosí served as the capital of the republican government under President Benito Juárez. A modern industrial city has grown up around the colonial Plaza de Armas, with the cathedral and governor`s palace (1770). The Spanish Colonial Baroque Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, with colorful tiled domes, has one of the most famous sculptural altars and a façade that are considered among the finest in Mexico. There is a famous bullring called Plaza de Toros Fermin Rivera.

The Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí (UASLP) is in the city. Based on a Jesuit College founded in 1624, in 1923 the Instituto Científico y Literario was raised to the category of a university, is now recognized as one of the best Universities in Latin America.

The Plan of San Luis Potosí, issued November 20, 1910, was the opening shot of Mexico`s revolution against the dictator Porfirio Díaz. The Mexican presidential election of 1910 was stolen when Díaz had his opponent Francisco I. Madero arrested and imprisoned. Madero fled and issued the Plan of San Luis Potosí, declaring the election void and calling upon Mexicans to take up arms against the government.

Tampico, Mexico, Lodging

Tampico is the main city in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico, and the Mexican Gulf`s main economic powerhouse. The city lies in a rich petroleum producing region; it is a chief commercial center of northeastern Mexico and one of the most important seaports of the country. Although oil is the largest export of the port of Tampico, it also is a major exporter of silver, copper, lumber, wool, hemp, and other agricultural products. Containerised cargo, however, is mainly dealt with at the nearby ocean port of Altamira.

In 1921, Mexican commercial aviation started here, as its first flight, by Mexicana Airlines, took off from Tampico`s General Francisco Javier Mina International Airport (IATA airport code: TAM) to Benito Juárez International Airport in Mexico City. This airport was also one of the first ILS equipped airports in the country.

Tampico`s Country Club, the Campestre, and its golf course, is one of the oldest in Mexico. Seafood is important in the city - even its locals are informally known as Jaibos - and the crab emblem is seen in many places, from the sides of buses to park benches.

The prevalence of New Orleans-style architecture is attributed to the early years of the city, when many building supplies, including pre-built housing components, were shipped to the area during its initial construction. The `historical` downtown area of Plaza de Armas and Plaza de Libertad has been greatly restored and improved in recent years with the hope of attracting more tourist revenue.

The Cathedral of Tampico, also known as The Temple of the Immaculate Conception, located in Plaza de Armas, dates to the late 19th century - although its current appearance is due to many restorations. It is of the Neo-classical style in light brown canter, with Corinthian style columns and three enormous doors that form the entrance. It has two towers made of three bodies. The eastern one has a large, London-made, public chiming clock, a gift from Don Angel Sainz Trapaga. In its interior, which has been refurbished recently, there are several wall paintings and other works of art. The altar is of white Carrara marble.

Taxco, Mexico, Lodging

Taxco (full name: Taxco de Alarcón) is an antique colonial silver-mining center located in the northern reaches of the Mexican state of Guerrero. It is located at 18°33`N 99°36`W, some 200 km southwest of Mexico City along the old highway to Acapulco. It stands at a height of some 1800 m above sea level in the western arm of the Sierra Madre. The city serves as the administrative center of the municipality of the same name, which covers a total area of 347 km² of the surrounding territory.

Even though silver mining had been the main commercial activity of Taxco since colonial times, in the present silver mining is no longer considered a profitable activity, and the city is better known for its traditional silverwork, which attracts tourism throughout the year.

The city is built on the side of a mountain, with very steep narrow cobblestone streets lined by whitewashed houses with red-tiled roofs. It is also renowned for its more than 200-year-old baroque-style church, the Santa Prisca Cathedral.

Tijuana, Mexico, Lodging

Tijuana is the largest city in the Mexican state of Baja California and the seat of the municipality of the same name. Tijuana is the westernmost city in Latin America as well as one of the northernmost (neighboring Mexicali is slightly further north). For this reason Tijuana is referred to as the corner of Mexico and/or Latin America. The city stands on the U.S.-Mexico border, adjacent to San Diego County, California, United States to the north.

The area in which the city of Tijuana is situated in a region once inhabited by the Kumeyaay Indians, a tribe of Yuman-speaking hunter-gatherers. Europeans first arrived in 1542, when the Portuguese/Spanish explorer Joao Rodrigues Cabrilho toured the coastline of the area, which was later mapped in 1602 by Sebastián Viscaíno. In 1769, Father Juan Crespí documented more detailed information about the area that would one day be called the Valley of Tijuana and Father Junípero Serra founded the first mission of Alta California in San Diego.

The city has various schools of superior studies, conservatory music, dance schools, plastic arts, science and culinary arts. Also, there is a professional and university theater, an opera, many movie theaters, two bullrings, and diverse festivals along the year.

The Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT) is comprised of a theatre, lecture rooms, video rooms, a library, exhibition hall, museum of the Californias, a futuristic planetary movie theater, and a restaurant. Since 1992, the CECUT has hosted the Orchestra of Baja California (OBC), it headquarters the Center of Scenic Arts of the Northwest (CAEN) and the Hispanic-American Center for Guitar (CHG). Since 2001, the CECUT receives an about a million visitors per year, making it Baja California`s most important cultural center. Another important culture center is La Casa de la Cultura, comprising a school, theater, and public library. Dance, painting, music, plastic arts, photography and language are taught there. The city also has Instituto Municipal de Arte y Cultura (Municipal Institute of Art and Culture), the Tijuana Wax Museum, and the Museo El Trompo (The Trompo Museum).

Tijuana also has a very active and independent artist community whose internationally recognized work has earned Tijuana the title of `one of the most important new cultural meccas`, according to Newsweek. An anthology of Tijuana`s art scene, as part of the Strange New World exhibition, is being curated by the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art and will travel extensively across the USA in 2006. The music of The Nortec Collective and other electronic music artists, such as Murcof, have placed Tijuana in the international eye of specialized magazines and forums in recent years.

Toluca, Mexico, Lodging

The capital of the state of México, Toluca, is today a large and modern industrial centre, sprawling across a wide plain. At an altitude of nearly 2700m, it is the highest city in the country, and comes surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, dominated by the white-capped Nevado de Toluca.

With only a few minor attractions, it is not a place you`ll want to linger. It is, however, the site of what is allegedly the largest single market in the country, despite being halved in size by the city`s government. Held a couple of kilometres southeast of the centre, just east of the bus station, every Friday (and to a lesser extent throughout the week), the market constitutes the overriding reason to visit, and you may just want to stop over on a Thursday night (book accommodation in advance) then move on, or even make an early start from Mexico City on the Friday morning.

The market attracts hordes of visitors from the capital, but is so vast that there can be no question of its being overwhelmed by tourists; quite the opposite, many outsiders find themselves overwhelmed by the scale of the place, lost among the thousands of stalls and crowds from the state`s outlying villages.

Though increasingly dominated by cheap imported goods and clothing, there is still a substantial selection of local crafts - woven goods and pottery above all. For an idea of what quality and prices to expect, head first for the Casa de Artesanías, Paseo Tollocan 700 Ote, a few blocks east of the market.

It is considered the 9th biggest Metro area in the country. Torreon is served by Francisco Sarabia International Airport.

Torreón is located near the southwest border of the state of Coahuila and within the Lagoon region of the state. The border is marked by the Río Nazas river and is also the divider between the city of Gómez Palacio in Durango and Torreón.

The cities of Torreón, Gomez Palacio and Lerdo make up the Comarca Lagunera, which is a basin within the Chihuahuan Desert that has a high economic activity.

Torreón, and the Comarca Lagunera as a whole, is home to the main dairy basin in Mexico, the production of milk is currently five million litres a day, most of the milk produced goes to other markets in Mexico and is deemed excessive for a water deficient region. Tulum, Mexico, Lodging

Tulum (sometimes rendered as Tuluum) is a Pre-Columbian walled city of the Maya civilization located on the Caribbean Sea coast of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. There is also a modern town of the same name nearby, often called Tulum Pueblo.

The archaeological site is relatively compact (compared with many other Maya sites in the vicinity), and is one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites. Its proximity to the modern tourism developments along the Mexican Caribbean coastline (the so-called Mexican Riviera, surrounding Cancún) has made it a popular destination for tourists. Daily tour buses bring a constant stream of visitors to the site. The Tulum ruins are the third most visited archaeological site in Mexico, after Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza. It is popular for the picturesque view of the Caribbean and a location just 120 km south of the popular beach resort of Cancún.

The tourist destination is now divided into three main areas: the archaeological site, the pueblo or town, and the hotel zone, or strip of beach lined with small cabanas.

Several years ago, Tulum Pueblo was a quiet village 2 km from the archaeological site, and tourism outside of the ruins was limited to a few small shops and simple cabanas on the beach. As of 2005 population of Tulum Pueblo has grown to over 10,000 permanent inhabitants. The hotel zone of boutique hotels on the Tulum beach has grown to over 40 small hotels, most of them cabanas built in the traditional Mayan style with thatched palm roofs. The hotel zone is mostly filled with tourists whereas Tulum Pueblo is mostly a Mexican town, with some tourists eating in the restaurants and bars at night.

Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico, Lodging

Tuxtla Gutiérrez is a muncipio (municipality) and capital city of the Mexican state of Chiapas. It is the seat of the local public administration, of the local authorities, and of the delegations of the federal government in the state. It covers more than 40% of the municipal territory, and continues to grow.

Because of its geographical location, Tuxtla Gutiérrez has been the permanent seat of Plan Puebla Panama (PPP) since the establishment of the Mecanismo de Diálogo y Concertación de Tuxtla, agreed by the Heads of States of the government of Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama prior to the initial round of meetings in the Mesoamerican Poliforum in 2001.

Its economic activity depends on the governmental spending and on the consumption of the local bureaucracy. Tuxtla Gutiérrez has few industries, though it does have a growing commerce of goods. It has the second largest economic revenue in the state, after Tapachula.

A new national airport, which opened in 2006 was built 45 minutes east of town in the Chiapa de Corzo municipality. There is currently no public transportation between the airport and the town, but this is subject to change. Previously, the national airport Llano San Juan, located in the town of Berriozábal was in operation, but due to recurring adverse weather conditions, the new airport was built to ensure more timely arrivals and departures.

Uxmal, Mexico, Lodging

Uxmal is a large Pre-Columbian ruined city of the Maya civilization in the state of Yucatán, Mexico. It is 78 km south of Mérida, Yucatán, or 110 km from that city on Highway 261 towards Campeche, Campeche), 15 km south-southeast of the town of Muna.

Uxmal is pronounced Oosh-mahl. The place name is Pre-Columbian and it is usually assumed to be an archaic Maya language phrase meaning Built Three Times, although some scholars of the Maya language dispute this derivation.

Maya chronicles say that Uxmal was founded about 500 by Hun Uitzil Chac Tutul Xiu. For generations Uxmal was ruled over by the Xiu family, was the most powerful site in western Yucatan, and for a while in alliance with Chichen Itza dominated all of the northern Maya area.

After the Spanish conquest of Yucatán (in which the Xiu allied themselves with the Spanish), early colonial documents suggest that Uxmal was still an inhabited place of some importance into the 1550s, but no Spanish town was built here and Uxmal was soon after largely abandoned.

Even before the restoration work Uxmal was in better condition than many other Maya sites thanks to being unusually well built. Much was built with well cut stones not relying on plaster to hold the building together. The Maya architecture here is considered matched only by that of Palenque in elegance and beauty. The Puuc style of Maya architecture predominates. Thanks to its good state of preservation, it is one of the few Maya cities where the casual visitor can get a good idea of how the entire ceremonial center looked in ancient times.

A number of temple-pyramids, quadrangles, and other monuments, some of significant size, and in varying states of preservation, are found at Uxmal.

The majority of hieroglyphic inscriptions were on a series of stone stelae unusually grouped together on a single platform. The stelae depict the ancient rulers of the city, and they show signs that they were deliberately broken and toppled in antiquity; some were re-erected and repaired.

Veracruz, Mexico, Lodging

The city of Veracruz is a major port city on the Gulf of Mexico in the Mexican state of Veracruz. It is Mexico`s third largest Gulf city (after Tampico and Coatzacoalcos-Minatitlán) and an important port on Mexico`s east coast. It is located 105 km (65 mi.) along Federal Highway 140 from the state capital Xalapa, and is the state`s third most populous city (after the Coatzacoalcos-Minatitlán conurbation and Orizaba), with a population of about 500,000 in 2000. It is often referred to as Puerto de Veracruz to distinguish it from the state. The people of Veracruz are known as jarochos.

The city is known for its rich traditions of music, including marimba bands, danzonera and comparsa. A special kind of music called son jarocho, a mix of mexican folk music and cuban son, was developed in southern Veracruz state, in and around Veracruz, Veracruz. La Bamba is the most famous example of son jarocho. An equally rich dance tradition parallels Veracruz`s unique musical styles.

In downtown Veracruz, a large marble-tiled zócalo, called the Plaza de Armas or Plaza Lerdo, is the heart of the city`s lively nightlife. It is lined with arcades that house bars and cafes. On a nearly nightly basis large groups of people sit outside in the plaza enjoying food, drinks and cigars, while they watch musicians and dancers that perform in the square. Veracruz`s 18th century cathedral and 17th century Palacio Municipal are also located on the plaza.

The yearly Carnaval festival in Veracruz, a nine-day party in February or March, is the most spectacular festival of its kind in Mexico. The city also celebrates a yearly Afrocaribeno festival in July. These fesivities illustrate the fact that the city is in many ways more connected to Caribbean culture than that of inland Mexico.

The malecón harbor-front walk along the docks draws many tourists, more from within Mexico than foreigners. The city has several beaches as well, like Villa del Mar and Mocambo.

Xalapa, Mexico, Lodging

Xalapa (or Jalapa) is the capital city of the Mexican state of Veracruz. In the year 2005 census, it reported a population of 413,196. The municipal seat of Xalapa is the city of Xalapa de Enríquez, named in honor of the gobernador (governor) Juan de la Luz Enriquez. In everyday usage, however, the city is generally referred to by the shorter name Xalapa. It was called La ciudad de las flores (City of Flowers) by Alexander Von Humboldt.

Its name comes from the Nahuatl roots Xalli (sand) and Apan (water place), which approximately means spring in the sand. The spelling Xalapa (like the word México) reflects archaic spelling. Jalapa (like Méjico) is modernized and is used mostly by foreigners.

Xalapa is also known as the Athens of Veracruz because of the strong cultural influence of its three major universities, Universidad Veracruzana (the main public university in the State of Veracruz), Universidad de Xalapa and Universidad Anáhuaca de Xalapa, and also for the wide variety of cultural events in Xalapa like its theater, museums, and street art. Xalapa also has the widest collection of Diego Rivera`s paintings in all Mexico, at a gallery called Pinacoteca Diego Rivera, nearby City Hall and Parque Juárez in the downtown area.

In folklore, the Spaniards believed that Xalapa was the birthplace and home of the Florecita (literally little flower), the most beautiful woman in the world. Even today, some people continue to adhere to this belief, and some natives insist that it is not a legend. Jalapeño chilis are named after an old factory of canned chile pepper called La jalapeña located in this city.

Xpu Ha, Mexico, Lodging

Quintana Roo is a state of Mexico, on the eastern part of the Yucatán Peninsula. It borders the states of Yucatán and Campeche to the north and west, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and the nation of Belize to the south.

The capital of Quintana Roo is the city of Chetumal. Quintana Roo also contains the resort city of Cancún, the islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, the towns of Bacalar, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Juárez, Akumal, and Puerto Morelos, as well as the ancient Maya ruins of Chacchoben, Chakanbakán, Chamax, Coba, Dzibanché, El Meco, Ichpaatán, Kohunlich, Muyil, Oxtankah, Tancah, Tulum, Tupak, Xel-Há, and Xcaret. The Sian Ka`an national park is also in Quintana Roo.

The area that makes up modern Quintana Roo was long part of Yucatán, sharing its history. With the Caste War of Yucatán starting in the 1840s, all non-natives were driven from the region and the independent Maya nation of Chan Santa Cruz was centered on what is now the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto. The region was for a time dominated by the religion of the Talking Cross: in a church was a cross guarded by Maya priests that was said to speak and give them orders. The Mexican government continued to have very little control over this region until the early decades of the 20th century.

The climate is predominantly tropical with rain in the summer months except in the south-east and south-west with intense temperatures and intense periods of rain with a relatively dry winter in the north. The average annual temperature is 26ºC. The dryer season is between February and May and the wetter season between May and October although January often sees high levels of rainfall in the north of the province.

Zacatecas, Mexico, Lodging

Zacatecas is a city in Mexico, the capital of the state of Zacatecas. Its population as of 2002 was approximately 115,000.

It is built in a deep, narrow ravine, 2450 m (8050 ft) above sea level, with narrow, crooked streets (callejones in Spanish) climbing the steep hillsides, and white, flat-roofed houses. The colonial center is a UNESCO World Heritage site and features elaborately decorated buildings, cobblestoned streets, and wrought-iron lanterns. The more modern outer suburbs are a mix of cinderblock shanties and gated communities for the wealthy.

The city is centered on the Plaza de Armas, a small open square bordered by the cathedral and the governor`s palace. Other small plazas and parks (jardines) dot the city, among them the Jardín de la Independencia and the tiny (19 m²) Jardín de Juárez.

The cathedral is an elaborately carved red-stone(cantera) structure, but its once richly decorated interior was looted during the civil wars of the 19th and 20th centuries. Churches abound, and many have recently been converted into art galleries or museums.

Overlooking the city from an elevation of 150 m (500 ft) is the Cerro de la Bufa, a rocky outcropping crowned by a chapel and which is a popular spot for hiking and taking in the view of the city below.

Zacatecas was founded in 1546 and was built over a rich vein of silver discovered by Juan de Tolosa in the same year. This and other mines in the vicinity attracted a large population, and it soon became one of the chief mining centres of Mexico.

Silver form Zacatecas and from Potosí in Bolivia was coined as pieces of eight and transported around the world by the Spanish treasure fleets and the Manila galleons. It was this silver what paid the wars of the Spanish Empire.

Mining is now no longer as important a part of the local economy, and in fact the primary mine (the Mina El Edén) has been converted into a tourist attraction, including an underground disco in a large hollowed out cave. Indeed, the city of Zacatecas is a popular tourist destination for Mexicans, and many of the local businesses cater to them. Tourists particularly visit Zacatecas during the September Feria nacional de Zacatecas and again in the spring during Easter Week.

Zihuatanejo is the seat of government for the municipality and the principal community in the region. Ixtapa is a government-planned tourist resort that was begun in the early 1970s and constructed on what was once a coconut plantation and mangrove estuary. Zihuatanejo reported a population of 62,367 in the 2005 Mexican census, whereas the population of Ixtapa was 6,406 persons (source: National Institute of Statistics, Geography, and Data Processing, INEGI).

An old-world Mexican fishing village nestled around a small bay dotted with beautiful protected beaches and no high rises, residents of Zihuatanejo hope its location at the water`s edge will not discourage tourists who fear the occurrence of tidal waves. (source: zihua.net) Zihuatanejo has the old-fashioned charm of traditional Mexican culture. It is a town that sprang up from a handful of families who were mostly fishermen. Fishing continues to be a way of life for a large number of families, and the increasing popularity of the area as a sportfishing destination has given new impetus to their livelihood.

Zihuatanejo can be reached by air, bus and highway and has its own airport, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International. Flights are available from Mexico City and various places in the United States and Canada.
