Playa del Carmen is a city on the coast of the Caribbean Sea in the north east of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, located at 20.62° North, 87.07° West. The city is the seat of the Solidaridad municipality. In 2003 the city had a population of about 49,000 people, though it is rapidly growing in population.

Tourism to this little city began with the passenger ferry service to Cozumel, an island across the Cozumel Channel and world-famous scuba diving destination. While passing through, many people realized that it was a nice place to relax away from the crowds of Cancún but with the same quality beaches and turquoise waters.

While not as incredible as Cozumel, Playa del Carmen`s coast offers some good scuba diving opportunities, as well as cenote diving for the more adventurous.

Today Playa del Carmen, or just `Playa` as locals like to call the city, is the center of the Riviera Maya concept, which covers from Cancún to Tulum and the Sian Ka`an biosphere reserve. All activity centers on the Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, located just one block inland from the beach, and lined with boutique hotels, shops, and small restaurants.

Puerto Aventuras is a community located in the municipality of Solidaridad, Quintana Roo. Solidaridad is one of the eight municipalities that make up the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It was created in 1993 when the municipality of Cozumel was split into two, with the mainland section constituting the new municipality of Solidaridad. It covers a total surface area of 4,245.67 km² and, in the 2005 census it had a population of 135,512.

Quintana Roo is a state of Mexico, on the eastern part of the Yucatán Peninsula. It borders the states of Yucatán and Campeche to the north and west, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and the nation of Belize to the south.

Puerto Morelos is a town in Quintana Roo, Mexico`s easternmost state.

Puerto Morelos stands in the north-east of the state, about 36 km south of the resort city of Cancún. It has historically been the main port between the mainland of Yucatán and the Island of Cozumel, and a regular automobile ferry runs from Puerto Morelos to Cozumel. The town is named after Mexican independence leader José María Morelos.

Puerto Morelos has grown rapidly with the development of tourism and as of 2003 is estimated to be the home to some 10,000 people.

One hundred meters from shore, lies the Puerto Morelos portion of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, and is designated as a National Marine Park.

Along the coast of the Mayan Riviera is Punta Maroma, which is a paradise-like place on the Caribbean, integrating a string of sandy white beaches, sometimes with ragged limestone shorelines, and others where the jungle actually touches the sand. A sweet-water river from some subterranean source, flowing into the turquoise sea, is typical of this zone. Small hotels and cabins provide the basic comforts.

Riviera Maya is a tourism district following the highway 307 of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It historically started at Playa del Carmen and ended at Tulum pueblo, though the towns of Puerto Morelos to the north of Playa del Carmen and Felipe Carrillo Puerto inland are both currently being promoted as part of the Riviera Maya tourist corridor. Tulum (sometimes rendered as Tuluum) is a Pre-Columbian walled city of the Maya civilization located on the Caribbean Sea coast of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. There is also a modern town of the same name nearby, often called Tulum Pueblo.

The archaeological site is relatively compact (compared with many other Maya sites in the vicinity), and is one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites. Its proximity to the modern tourism developments along the Mexican Caribbean coastline (the so-called Mexican Riviera, surrounding Cancún) has made it a popular destination for tourists. Daily tour buses bring a constant stream of visitors to the site. The Tulum ruins are the third most visited archaeological site in Mexico, after Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza. It is popular for the picturesque view of the Caribbean and a location just 120 km south of the popular beach resort of Cancún.

The tourist destination is now divided into three main areas: the archaeological site, the pueblo or town, and the hotel zone, or strip of beach lined with small cabanas.

Several years ago, Tulum Pueblo was a quiet village 2 km from the archaeological site, and tourism outside of the ruins was limited to a few small shops and simple cabanas on the beach. As of 2005 population of Tulum Pueblo has grown to over 10,000 permanent inhabitants. The hotel zone of boutique hotels on the Tulum beach has grown to over 40 small hotels, most of them cabanas built in the traditional Mayan style with thatched palm roofs. The hotel zone is mostly filled with tourists whereas Tulum Pueblo is mostly a Mexican town, with some tourists eating in the restaurants and bars at night.
